A natural rock

Quartzite is a natural metamorphic rock derived from sandstone. Quartz is a mineral and a major constituent of quartzite. The similar names can conceal a meaningful difference at the stone yard.

An engineered surface

Countertop products sold as engineered quartz combine mineral particles with binders. They are manufactured surfaces, rather than slabs of natural quartzite. Both deserve to be described accurately.

Ask for identification

Confirm the material behind the commercial name. “Soft quartzite” can be a misleading description for marble, which behaves differently. Ask your supplier for reliable identification and material-specific care guidance before choosing.

A name is the start of the conversation

Keep the supplier’s material identification with your selection, alongside the finish and intended use. Ask what the recommendation is based on and request written care guidance. A memorable trade name is useful for ordering, but should not be the whole technical description.

Choose for your everyday

Bring the same questions to either material: how should it be cleaned, what precautions are recommended and what support does the particular installation need? Judge a product against your use and the supplier’s guidance, rather than expecting every surface in one category to behave identically.
